Church Lawn Signs

Have you ever driven by one of those cheesy church lawn sign only to shake your head in disgust, wondering just what the hell that particular church was thinking? It's usually some try-to-be-clever-but-fail-on-every-front statement designed to...well, I'm not sure what they're designed to do.

"Come in and pray today. Beat the Christmas Rush!"
"How will you spend eternity? Smoking or non smoking?"

I recently read an article from someone who thought that there were at least five purposes for these signs:
1. To advertise upcoming events;
2. To create employment for those who design and build signs;
3. To display how pithy and clever the minster is;
4. To lecture and berate the unfaithful;
5. To somehow motivate the passerby to come in.

The author of this article thought that purpose #5 was viable. But then, he had a vision. Suppose he was in a particularly crusty, cynical mood, and he walked by a beautiful limestone church, with this message on their lawn sign:

"Do you feel fucked up?"

That's it.

This particular author felt like that would be a message that might draw him in. Would you go into a church like that?

I absolutely, positively, would.

I think I'd be more motivated if it said "do you feel fucked up? Well, come on in... because we are too!"

Now there's a group I can relate to. I don't need "fixed" by any group of people who believe they have "it" all together, but I do tend to gravitate to others who realize that they don't need fixed either.

i agree with bruced: i remember a quote i heard (in church, actually!) a while back - "a church is a hospital for sinners, not a museum for saints"... looking back, i suppose i was blessed to be a part of such a humble community.

its always got to be A/G churches huh?!?! hahahah

for starters... i hate church signs... but do love once when a friend put on his churches sign, "read the bible, it will scare the hell out of you"... that was the last time he got to put a quote in the sign!
